Jumhooree Party (JP) has made the final preparations to announce the running mate of the joint opposition’s presidential candidate in the upcoming elections.
JP’s Chief Spokesperson Ali Solih said the deadline to apply for the running mate position expired at 3:00 p.m. on Friday. Hence, all the candidates that fulfil the requirements mandated by the Constitution for the presidential and running mate positions will be announced at 4:00 p.m. today, he said.
Ali Solih said the party primary draw among the candidates will be taken according to the party charter at 5:00 p.m. The council meeting will be held at 8:30 p.m. and the vote will be taken at 9:00 p.m. he said.
He further said the historical primary vote by JP to elect a running mate for the opposition alliance presidential candidate Mohamed Ibrahim Solih will be a secret vote by the council members. 41 council members would vote in the primary, including the newly elected 15 members, President of the Youth League, President of the Women’s League, Council’s Secretary General, Chief Spokesperson, Registrar, and Treasurer, he said.
JP’s Chief Spokesperson also said that the vote will go very smoothly and will be an exemplary decision for the good of the country.
The joint opposition had agreed that their chosen candidate to run for President would be MDP’s candidate while the candidate to run for Vice-President would be selected from JP. With that JP opened the opportunity for interested individuals to apply for the running mate position and four members from JP applied for the position.
The four members that submitted applications for the position are former minister and JP’s deputy leader Abdulla Ameen, deputy leader Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan, Kaashidhoo MP Faisal Naseem, and Kendhoo MP Ali Hussain.
