Police, on Sunday, had stopped a demonstration calling for a fair and justice election, and the release of political prisoners arrested for political motives.
Opposition heads, members of parties and reform supporters all gathered around Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s main office to participate in the demonstration organized by the party. However when the demonstrators gathered near MDP’s office, SO police arrived at the scene and closed off the area, preventing them from marching forth.
When the police obstructed them, Jumhooree Party (JP)’s deputy leader Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan stated that the demonstration was one calling for a fair and just election, however the actions of the police show that they will never allow a peaceful political event to be carried out in the country.
Pointing out that the police does not obstruct government organized events and rallies, Dr. Hussain said this is proof of how much some political parties are discriminated in the country and barred from holding political events.
North Maafannu MP Imthiyaz Fahmy said every single citizen of the country was previously given the right to free assembly by the Constitution. Hence, obstructing a peaceful protest is against the law and those officers who prevent such demonstrations will be given the rightful punishment after a fair trial, he said.
He also said that President Abdulla Yameen’s governance is over and that a government that the people desire will soon be established.
While police had prevented Sunday’s rally, they had been repeatedly obstructing opposition rallies.
