Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has begun providing security for the presidential candidates and running mates competing in the upcoming presidential elections.
MNDF’s media officer Ibrahim Azim said the presidential candidates and their running mates were being provided security since Saturday and will continue to be provided security till the end of the election.
The security of presidential candidates and their running mates is the responsibility of MNDF by law.
Two candidates will be competing in the presidential elections slated for September 23. Candidate number 1 is Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)’s presidential candidate President Abdulla Yameen and his running mate Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed while candidate number 2 is the opposition alliance’s presidential candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and his running mate Faisal Naseem.
MNDF’s security had begun after the candidates were assigned their running numbers and officially allowed to begin their campaigns by Elections Commission (EC). Meanwhile campaign teams from both sides, with their candidate and running mate, have already been travelling to the islands on campaign trips.
The opposition candidate pair had visited many islands and revealed numerous pledges on the trips after meeting with the people. They also carried out door-to-door campaigns in Male’, Villimale’ and Hulhumale’, inquiring about the people’s health.
