An official of the ‘Maumoon Reform Movement’ said that Gayoom’s meeting with the lawyers has also been cancelled after his health took a turn for the worst.
According to the official, Maldives Correctional Services (MCS) called the lawyers to inform them that the meeting from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. has been cancelled only after they left for Maafushi. MCS informed the legal team that it was Gayoom who cancelled the meeting with them when his health deteriorated, the official said.
The official also said that the Gayoom’s health worsened due to his ailment, Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), which causes dizzy spells.
Gayoom’s health worsened around 9:00 a.m. and doctors at Maafushi Prison advised that he be taken to Male’ for treatment, the official said.
However MCS refused to take Gayoom to the capital, instead opting to bring in doctors from Male’ to see him. An ENT specialist was brought in well after 1:00 p.m. in the afternoon, the official said.
Gayoom was convicted of the state raised obstruction of justice charge after he allegedly refused to hand over his phone for the police investigation and was sentenced to 1 year and seven months in prison.
