President Abdulla Yameen is seeking to take legal action against Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and RaajjeTV for slander.
President Yameen’s legal team announced this at a press conference held at Sakeena Manzil on Wednesday night.
President Yameen is seeking legal action against MDP for statements made at a press conference held by the party on September 3, and RaajjeTV for broadcasting the conference live.
President Yameen’s legal team said they have decided to take legal action against MDP for slandering him and make them accountable for the harm done to him by their statements.
The legal team also stated that they will seek compensation and action against the members who spoke on behalf of MDP at the press conference and RaajjeTV for violating the Constitution and the Defamation Law and slandering President Yameen.
The press conference held by MDP last Monday was joined by the party’s Chairperson Hassan Latheef and MDP’s Secretary General Anas Abdul Sattar. They stated that President Yameen is linked to a local company involved in an illegal oil trade abroad.
MDP filed a case at the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) against President Yameen regarding the case, which was described by his legal team as an attack on his candidacy rights ahead of the presidential elections this month.
