Jumhooree Party (JP)’s deputy leader and former minister Ameen Ibrahim says President Abdulla Yameen has always feared the vote.
In a tweet on Saturday, Ameen said President Yameen has always been fearful of the vote and had acted distastefully to avoid it as is shown by history.
Ameen said many plans are being carried out to create fear and unrest among the people in order to postpone the elections.
The people can no longer be intimidated by these tactics and President Yameen will be defeated by the vast majority in the upcoming presidential election, he said.
Meanwhile many political figures had repeatedly accused President Yameen of taking various ‘precautions’ for fear of losing in the parliament elections held previously.
Political parties had also stated that the local council elections held last year was postponed for a long period by the influence of the government. Although that election was held three months after the scheduled date, the government had lost the election by a large margin.
While it seems likely that the opposition will win the upcoming elections, police had recently held a press conference stating that they had received reports that some are planning to incite violence on the day of the election. Without giving any detail regarding the issue, police said they would not allow anyone to carry out an act of violence.
The opposition alliance responded to this saying that they would not carry out any acts of violence but would defeat President Yameen with the majority of the votes.
