Maldives has been titled the champions of SAFF Championship 2018, the most prestigious regional football tournament, after 10 years.
Maldives won the final match against India, 2-1, on Sunday. The goals were scored by Ibrahim Mahdy and Ali Faasir.
Maldives had last won the acclaimed tournament in 2008 after defeating India by 1-0.
Maldives took the lead 20 minutes into the match. Ibrahim Mahdy scored the first goal for Maldives at the 18th minute mark with an assist from Naiz Hassan.
Ali Faasir scored the second goal at the 65th minute, with an assist from Hamza Mohamed. India’s lone goal was scored near the end of the match.
Bhutan was named the ‘fair play’ team of the tournament and the best player of the tournament was awarded to Maldives team's goalkeeper, Mohamed Faisal, who had played exceptionally well in the tournament.
Maldives faced the biggest challenge in the tournament against India. While Maldives had defeated India to win the SAFF Championship in 2008, Maldives was defeated by India in the final match of the tournament in 2009.
