The opposition coalition has agreed to nominate Jumhooree Party (JP) founder and Maamigili MP Qasim Ibrahim as the next Speaker of Parliament.
Speaking to the press after the meeting held at M. Kunooz on Wednesday, president-elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said a no-confidence motion has been submitted against Speaker Abdulla Maseeh, hence after passing that motion a new Speaker has to be elected.
The opposition’s parliamentary group has decided to elect Qasim as the next Speaker of Parliament, he said.
Solih also said under Qasim’s leadership, the parliament would show exemplary performance. The opposition coalition is also planning to submit a motion to repeal the anti-defamation law at the next session of the parliament and will also support the resolution passed to free President Nasheed, he said.
Solih further said both he and vice president-elect Faisal Naseem will take part in parliament sessions until they take oath.
Speaking to the press, Qasim said the parliament would show vast improvement in the future.
Meanwhile many MPs have previously showed their support and endorsed Qasim for Parliament Speaker.
