Former member of the Judicial Service Commission (JCS) Aishath Velezinee has been released from police custody and handed over to her family.
Velezinee was arrested for blasphemous comments regarding the Islamic Faith.
Police said they released her from custody and handed her over to the family after doctors advised she seek medical treatment. Police also stated that her arrest did not violate any law and followed due procedures.
Velezinee was arrested after making numerous comments against Islam and its Prophet (PBUH) on social media. She also claimed to be a prophet, which, combined with her blasphemous comments, prompted the Islamic ministry to declare her an apostate.
Police had on May 23, 2017 ordered Velezinee to be present at the police station within 14 days in relation to the investigation regarding the case. However at that time she was living abroad, and continued to make and share blasphemous videos on social media.
She was arrested on Tuesday, upon returning to the country after a long period abroad.
Some political individuals and others called for her release after the arrest. Those calling for her release stated that she is mentally unstable and needs medical intervention and not arrest and persecution. They said she should be taught the correct Islam knowledge through learned scholars.
On the other hand, those calling for her arrest stated that she is an apostate and should be given the relevant punishment and should never be let loose into society.
