A major fire that destroyed a large part of Gili Lankanfushi, near Male’ Atoll Himmafushi, has been fully extinguished.
Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF)’s media officer Ibrahim Azim said the fire which destroyed many water villas at the resort, was completely put out by 5:00 a.m. They had not received report of any fatalities, he said.
However, VNews has learned that some people were brought to Male’ due to smoke inhalation.
According to Azim, MNDF’s Fire and Rescue Services received report of the incident around 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday night. Since the fire was rapidly spreading, a second team of fire fighters were dispatched to the scene, he said.
While the whole process took almost six hours, the water villas and restaurant was burned beyond use.
VNews understands that the resort only has water villas for tourists and the land itself is used for the restaurant, administrative office blocks and staff quarters.
While the cause of the fire is not yet known, Tourism minister Ali Waheed had also travelled to the resort following the unfortunate incident.
Due to the celebration of New Year, the resort had been packed with tourists when the fire broke out.
