Football Association of Maldives (FAM) has decided to not participate in the U15 SAFF Championship, and instead decided to participate in the U16 International 4 Nations Cup to be held in Doha.
FAM has received criticism for their decision to not partake in the U15 SAFF Championship that will be held in India from August 21 to 31. The competing nations for the SAFF Championship this year are India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan and Sri Lanka.
In a press release yesterday, FAM stated that they have decided to not participate in the SAFF Championship to partake in the U16 International 4 Nations Cup that will be held in Qatar capital, Doha from August 23 to 30.
FAM informed that the decision was due to the overlap of the dates. They also detailed that the association's technical team felt that the teams participating in the International 4 Nations Cup in Doha are stronger than the Asian teams in the SAFF Championship, and therefore would benefit the young players more to compete in Doha.
UEFA recently hosted an international U15 tournament in Addu City which was attended by Bhutan, Saudi Arabia, and Latvia.
