Kolhumadulu Burunee Council has said that vessels and other property are sustaining extensive damage due to large waves inside the harbor that is causing damage to the sea wall.
President of the Burunee Council Hassan Zareer said that the damages will continue to increase if the quay is not repaired soon.
The harbor in Burunee was built in 2005 after the population in the island quadrupled due to the temporary settlement of Vilufushi residents in Burunee after the 2004 Tsunami. It was constructed in a short period of time due to the increase in fishing boats and other vessels.
The harbor is built on the west of the island, in an area that previously experienced large waves. The 250 feet wide 500 feet long harbor has sustained multiple damages in the 13 years since construction, including damages to both the seawall and the dock.
The island has two fishing boats, two speedboats, as well as 15 smaller vessels. One of the speedboats sustained damages and sunk in the harbor on August 3 due to strong winds and large waves.
Many similar incidents have occurred in Burunee due to the damages to the harbor.
