Minister of Gender, Family and Social Services Shidhatha Shareef has said that the government aims to improve the economic participation of women by providing business opportunities.
Minister Shidhatha said this while speaking at the Sustainable Growth of Women Entrepreneurs and Export Promotion (SWEEP) event being held in Jabalpur, India.
She said that fishing and tourism are the largest industries in the Maldives, and that the government is working to promote the participation of women in these two industries.
She noted the importance of considering the role of women while establishing economic policies, and noted that there are women employed at the policy making level in the government institution concerning business prospects and the economy of the Maldives. Shidhatha revealed that the government is working to promote women's economic participation, especially in the atolls.
Speaking about the Gender Ministry's role in these efforts, she guaranteed that the Ministry will play a vital role in women empowerment in the Maldives. She stated that a Gender Equality Policy and Gender Equality Action Plan will soon be developed, which will provide equal opportunities to both men and women in economic development.
A delegation of 21 representatives from the Maldives led by Minister Shidhatha is partaking in the SWEEP 2019.
