Former Leader of DRP who defected to MDP Ahmed Thasmeen Ali says Prosecutor General Muhuthaz Muhusin’s actions of recent, are making the public lose faith in the autonomy of the Prosecutor General’s position.
Speaking on VTV’s television coverage calling on the government to release political detainees, Thasmeen said that although the Prosecutor General needs public trust, the current PG Muhuthaz Muhusin is not trusted by the public.
“Politically motivated charges are being raised against politicians. Everyone knows that. The charges are being amended as and when seen fit. This is being done because Muhuthaz himself is taking sides”, accused Thasmeen.
He said that the fact that Former President Nasheed’s trial and Former Defence Minister Colonel (Retired) Mohamed Nazim’s trial are being conducted simultaneously is itself questionable. He also said that the timings at which the trials are being conducted are also questionable.
Thasmeen emphasized that such cases are never prosecuted in such a hurry in any other nation and that scheduling trials for night time is also not a seen practice.
Speaking on VTV Parliamentary Group member of MDP Mohamed Aslam said, Dr. Ibrahim Didi, Colonel (Retired) Mohamed Nazim and former President Nasheed were arrested, outside set procedures.
“Today, the charges leveled against Nasheed and Nazim are politically motivated. Arresting politicians and charging them with absurd offences, is a plan by the government”, said Aslam.
He also said that, allegations that Dr Didi resisted arrest and assaulted a police officer are attempts frame him. He said that the allegations against MP Azim are also premeditated.
