Ministry of Home Affairs announces that building a replica of ‘Kalhuoffummi’ will be completed in December. Work is underway on building a replica of ‘Kalhuoffummi’, the historic vessel used by freedom fighter Mohamed Thakurufaanu and his allies in their campaign against the Portuguese invaders. This is being carried out as part of the country’s fiftieth Independence Day celebrations.
Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Ahmed Saleem said that right now, boat builders are carrying out the final work on building the replica.
Work on building the replica began at H. Dh. Neykurendhoo on August 8, 2015. The project was officially inaugurated by senior members of the island council and students at a special function.
Maldives Maritime and Underwater Heritage Society has been assigned the project of building a replica of the historic vessel. They are building a 51 feet long vessel.
The original Kalhuohfummi was built by freedom fighters and brothers Mohamed Thakurufaanu, Ali Thakurufaanu and Hassan Thakurufaanu at H. A. Baarah.
The government initially declared that the vessel would be built at B. Maalhos. However, changes to the venue were made, later on.
The vessel will sail around Male’ after being completed. However, it is to be kept docked at Sultan Park, as a historic object.
