Ooredoo Maldives on Wednesday signed an agreement with State Electric Company Ltd. (STELCO) to enable bill payment using Ooredoo Mobile Money Service, which will allow customers to pay their electricity bills conveniently through their mobile phones.
The agreement was signed by Ooredoo Maldives' CEO Vikram Sinha and STELCO’s Managing Director Abdul Shakoor Solih, on behalf of their respective companies, during a ceremony held at STELCO.
Mr. Vikram Sinha stressed that Ooredoo continues to explore new and innovative ways of enriching people’s lives, connecting them to convenient new solutions for everyday issues faced across the communities. He added that while the company prepares for the commercial launch of Ooredoo Mobile Money services in the Maldives, Ooredoo is pleased to partner with STELCO in order to add the new feature to its mobile money portfolio.
STELCO's CEO Abdul Shakoor Solih thanked Ooredoo for its initiative, which will now enable STELCO's customers to pay their bills anywhere, at any time using their mobile phones.
Ooredoo Maldives piloted its Mobile Money services in February 2016, with the aim of providing local communities with a convenient, secure and affordable way to manage monetary transactions through a simple mobile phone. The services enable monetary transactions to be carried out via a mWallet - a virtual account tied to the customer’s mobile number and valid identification card. Ooredoo’s mWallet allows customers to deposit, withdraw and transfer money, top-up their prepaid accounts, pay merchants, and even pay their bills.
While Ooredoo’s Mobile Money service has only been opened to a limited number of customers during the pilot-phase, the service will soon be available for all customers using a local network - provided that they have a valid national ID card or passport, following its commercial launch.
