A boat carrying 1800 sacks of staple food to southern atolls has run aground.
The boat, belonging to State Trading Organization (STO), ran aground on a reef near Makunudu Island resort.
The incident was reported to Coast Guard’s Maritime and Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) at around 3:16 a.m. on Friday.
Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) said as soon as the incident was reported, a harbour craft was dispatched with a team of divers.
MNDF said the boat was carrying a Maldivian and three foreigners and that several sacks of staple food on the boat had fallen into the sea when it ran aground.
No was hurt in the incident, and a salvage operation is underway, MNDF said.
