Kyrgyzstan outscored the Maldives in the first match played in the Asian Men’s Central Zone volleyball tournament.
Kyrgyzstan beat Maldives by three straight sets in the match played at Youth Center indoor court on Wednesday.
Kyrgyzstan won the sets, 25-22, 33-31 and 25-20.
Maldives maintained the lead in the first set of the competitive match, with outstanding play shown by both Hassan Nilam and Ismail Sajid (Kuda Kaattey). Although Maldives team was unable to finish the sets, they played well in the second set as well. The third set, however, was led by Kyrgyzstan team from the very beginning.
Four teams including Maldives participated in the tournament held from March 22 to 30, this year. They are Turkmenistan, Nepal and Kyrgyzstan.
The Maldives, Nepal match would be held at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Maldives beat Nepal to win bronze in the last tournament.
The second match of the tournament will be held on Thursday, between Nepal and Turkmenistan.
This is the biggest volleyball tournament ever to be held in the Maldives. All matches will be played at the Youth Centre.
The opening ceremony was inaugurated by chief guests’ sports minister Iruthisham Adam, Sports Commissioner Ahmed Nasheed (Dave) and president of Volleyball Association of Maldives (VAM) Mohamed Latheef. Heads of other sport associations also joined to watch the match.
