A cargo vessel sank in the early hours of Tuesday morning after colliding with an oil barge belonging to State Trading Organization (STO).
Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF)’s media official said the accident occurred five nautical miles south-west of GDh. Gaddhoo.
As soon as MNDF’s Southern Area received news of the incident, at around 12:16 a.m., a team of divers were dispatched to the scene, the media official said.
MNDF said no one was hurt in the accident, although the cargo vessel, named “Bandaa 3”, sank. The boat was carrying two Maldivian and three expatriate crew members. They were rescued by the oil barge.
Although the 90-foot vessel sank, it is still close to the water surface.
