Maldives Police Service has rejected 800 letters requesting for an independent investigation into the brutal murder of blogger Yameen Rasheed.
Yameen, a 29-year-old from S. Feydhoo who poked fun at the nation's politicians on his blog The Daily Panic, was found in the stairwell of his apartment building with multiple stab wounds to his neck and chest on April 23, and died shortly after being taken to hospital.
He was reportedly stabbed 32 times, including 14 times to his chest.
The letters were given to police on Tuesday by Yameen’s father Hussain Rasheed, who went to the station with supporters.
After rejecting the letters, police asked Mr Rasheed to return to the station and take them away.
He said that the letters also asked for an accelerated investigation.
He also said that while the police had supported the family after the murder and promised to find the killers, the family has been kept in the dark regarding the investigation.
Yameen’s family has been requesting for involvement of international experts in the investigation, and Mr Rasheed said he had repeated the request on Tuesday at the police station.
“The request is due to what had happened in investigations of previous such cases.”
On Monday, a suspect was arrested and was issued 15-days in detention.
Protest in Sri Lanka
A protest for Yameen Rasheed has been planned for next week’s Monday near the Maldivian High Commission in Sri Lanka.
Activists, journalists and members of Sri Lankan civil society are set to join the protest, reported Sri Lankan news website Colombo Gazette.
