Maldives Meteorological Centre (MET) has warned of the possibility of tornadoes in cloudy areas, with the onset of the south-west monsoon.
Speaking to VNews, assistant meteorologist at MET office, Hussain Waheed said that tornado formation is highly likely in areas with dense clouds and cautioned all to be alert.
Hussain said that the country will experience rainy weather all around and predicted the heaviest rain in the Central and Northern Atolls, accompanied by rough seas.
Hussain said wind speeds are clocked at 15 – 25 miles per hour in northern and central atolls, while southern atolls will experience winds at 8 -17 miles per hour.
He further said that during sea swells, the areas with high winds and heavy rain will presumably experience more sea swells. However none of these swells indicate hazard, he noted.
A tornado had swept across Hithadhoo Island, Addu City on Wednesday night, damaging 13 houses, a bookshop ‘Island Bookshop’, and the Ceylinco Insurance office. The tornado also uprooted a number of trees.
GDh. Nadella had also been experiencing heavy rainfall and flooding due to the bad weather.
