More than 50 farms in HDh. Vaikaradhoo have been damaged by ongoing severe weather.
Vaikaradhoo Council’s President Ibrahim Mohamed told VNews that some of the farms have been completely destroyed and that damages would amount to over MVR 300,000.
Banana and papaya farms were most severely affected, Mohamed said, adding that watermelon fields were also damaged.
While watermelon is the most popular fruit in Ramadan, watermelon fields in some other islands, including Thoddu, were destroyed by heavy rainfall and strong winds.
Thoddu Council informed that the island’s watermelon fields have not been damaged to such a large extent in recent history.
As heavy rainfall and strong winds continue to damage islands across the country, tornadoes caused destruction in S. Hithadhoo and F. Nilandhoo. Other islands severely damaged include GDh. Thinadhoo and HA. Uligan.
