The fisheries ministry says it is working to collect MVR 40 million owed to the State.
The ministry’s 2016 audit report stated that the ministry has not made enough of an effort to collect payments from customers who bought engine fishing boats from the government between 1997 and 2001, and payments from three contractors that built ice plants in different parts of the country.
The audit report said the total amount owed to the State adds up to MVR 39.9 million.
In a news conference on Sunday, the fisheries ministry’s Permanent Secretary Hussain Shinan noted that it was the current administration that first began collecting payments from boat owners.
He added that the ministry has extended the payment deadline for boat owners who are having difficulties paying.
The ministry said that they are also working with the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) and companies to get the MVR 16 million owed to the State from the ice plant projects.
