Former Managing Director of State Trading Organization (STO), Adam Azim, was arrested on Thursday morning on allegation of encouraging to topple the Yameen administration and defaming the judiciary.
Azim is the younger brother of jailed former defence minister Mohamed Nazim. He is also a member of the shadow cabinet and has been playing an active role in the opposition.
Police have also confirmed the arrest, but gave no details.
The arrest warrant, issued by Criminal Court’s Chief Judge Abdul Baaree Yusuf, stated that Azim has been trying create hatred among citizens about the judiciary by making false statements, and has been encouraging to unlawfully overthrow the government. It also stated that due to the possibility that he may try to influence evidence or erase evidence, allowing him to remain free may pose a danger to society.
Meanwhile, his brother Mohamed Nazim, who played a key role in the current government, is serving an 11-year prison sentence on terrorism charges, "for possession of a firearm". Both the brothers and their family have continued to say that Nazim was framed.
