Housing ministry has issued a notice to shutter all the cafés and some restaurants in the Male’ carnival area.
The government made the decision in order to modernize the area, said the ministry.
While the businesses in the area has been notified, the ministry did not give an exact date they will begin developing the area.
The project to modernize the carnival area was placed in this year’s budget.
Speaking to VNews, housing ministry’s Media Coordinator Ahmed Fazal said the notice was issued to restaurants in the area between Dhon Manik Sky View and Dolphin.
“Today we issued notices to the restaurants near Chillax café, which was closed yesterday. We didn’t order that the restaurants near Citron to be cleared out.”
Police on Saturday shut down popular café Chillax on the order of the housing ministry. The move has been criticized by the public on social media.
Last May, some cafés were cleared out to make way for King Salman Mosque; construction is scheduled to begin in July.
