Leading cable TV service provider Medianet has been fined MVR 500,000 for airing ‘Stealing Paradise’, the Al Jazeera documentary on the alleged corruption within the Maldivian government.
Maldives Broadcasting Commission said Medianet broadcasted content that could threaten national security.
The Commission also ordered the service provider to issue a statement of apology.
At the time of release of Stealing Paradise, the Commission warned TV service providers over publicizing the broadcasting time of the documentary and over re-broadcasting.
Stealing Paradise recently won an award from One World Media.
According to Al Jazeera: Stealing Paradise, released in September 2016, uncovers a $1.5 billion money laundering scheme involving Maldives, and show how former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb, now in jail, was involved in plots to benefit from the sale of islands and lagoons.
