Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)’s Isdhoo MP Ahmed Rasheed has confessed to signing the no-confidence motion against Speaker of Parliament Abdullah Maseeh.
Ahmed Rasheed said this at a news conference held by PPM and Maldives Democratic Alliance (MDA) coalition members at Dharubaaruge on Tuesday.
He further said he signed the motion when a respected individual requested him to do it, and that he did not want to disclose the name of the individual out of respect for that person.
Ahmed Rasheed said that after signing the motion he came to realize the gravity of the action and requested to withdraw his signature before it was filed in Parliament. When he called to inquire about it, he was assured that his signature was no longer on it, Ahmed Rasheed said.
“When parents ask us to do something it becomes incumbent upon us to fulfil their wishes. The individual who asked me to sign, was such a person to me. My character is such that I would say yes to anything good that is asked of me. However when I thought about the seriousness of the issue, I came to realize that even if the request came from my parents, it should not have been done”, MP Ahmed Rasheed said.
He also said that he did not sign the motion for money, and emphasized that he is not one to take bribes.
Although he had agreed that it was in fact his signature on the motion, he had previously stated that his signature was ‘forged’ and filed a motion in Parliament asking the secretariat to investigate the matter. This was filmed and the video was shared on twitter by PPM’s PG leader Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik.
The opposition promptly shared photos of Ahmed Rasheed signing the motion in answer to MP Nihan’s tweet.
