Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has on Monday ordered MPs who signed the no-confidence motion against Speaker of Parliament Abdullah Maseeh, to withdraw their signatures.
The order was issued in a letter sent by PPM’s Deputy Secretary General Iqbal Adam to the MPs who signed the motion.
The letter said endorsing such a petition while being a PPM MP was a violation of Articles 38 (a) and (b) of PPM Constitution. It was also a violation of Article 22 of PPM Parliamentary Group’s Standard Operating Practice, the letter read.
The MPs were given till 12:00 a.m. to withdraw their signatures and inform the PPM office.
The PPM MPs who signed the motion include Isdhoo MP Ahmed Rasheed, Dhidhdhoo MP Abdul Latheef Mohamed, South Mahchangolhi MP Abdullah Sinan, Dhangethi MP Ilham Ahmed, Ihavandhoo MP Mohamed Abdullah, Thinadhoo MP Saudhullah Hilmy, North Fuvahmulah MP Ali Shah, South Thinadhoo MP Abdullah Ahmed, Hanimaadhoo MP Hussain Shahudhee, and Mahibadhoo MP Ahmed Thoriq.
All the MPs who signed the motion with the exception of Isdhoo MP Ahmed Rasheed, had resigned from PPM by July 10. While they confirmed their resignation and circulated photos of the resignation letters on social media, PPM has maintained that their resignations were rejected because PPM’s disciplinary committee was investigating a case regarding them.
