Jumhoree Party (JP)’s Secretary General Ahmed Sameer said Party leader Qasim Ibrahim is in critical condition and cited doctors as saying that there is no additional treatment left for him in Maldives.
Qasim is currently in ADK Hospital.
Sameer said that an MRI scan showed that there was no course of action other than for Qasim to undergo heart surgery.
He said that it was a national concern that Qasim, who has financially assisted hundreds of Maldivians to get medical treatment, is not being given the opportunity to receive treatment abroad.
He asked that Qasim be given permission to go abroad, even if it was under the watch of a team of government officials.
Doctors from ADK Hospital, Medica Hospital and state-run Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) have urged him to seek treatment abroad citing his condition deteriorating.
IGMH’s heart specialist has recommended that he undergo heart surgery that is not available in Maldives.
Qasim’s legal team cited doctors as saying that his illness will become life-threatening if he is not treated quickly.
His passport had been confiscated at the airport under a court order as he was about to leave for treatment abroad.
Citizens have been condemning the government’s injustices inflicted on Qasim, who is renowned for his philanthropic work and his role in the development of Maldives.
He has financially assisted numerous Maldivians to get medical treatment, and youths to get a higher education and jobs.
He also invested in the development of islands.
