The new five Rufiyaa banknote began its circulation on Thursday.
Central bank Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) introduced the new MVR 5 note on May 10.
MMA Governor Dr. Azima Adam was the first to use the new banknote for a transaction at a special ceremony on Thursday morning.
The new banknote was designed by Abdulla Nashaath, the artist behind the ‘Randhiha Faheh’ banknote series which has been in circulation since last year.
Randhiha Faheh consists of new designs for the existing 10 Rufiyaa, 20 Rufiyaa, 50 Rufiyaa, 100 Rufiyaa and 500 Rufiyaa notes and the new 1,000 Rufiyaa note.
At the time, MMA had decided to introduce MVR 5 as a coin.
The new MVR 5 banknote has the same design theme and is the same size as the other notes in the series. It has a faceless rendering of popular Maldivian footballer Ali Ashfaq (Dhangadey).
MMA has also begun circulating a new MVR 2 coin this year.
