Pro-government rallies were held on 25 islands on Saturday to show support of President Abdulla Yameen, which were mocked by Opposition members.
The rallies dubbed “Citizens for Progress” were held with a large number of residents on islands from Haa Alif Atoll to Addu City.
In the rally, participants said they support President Yameen and the administration for bringing development to the Country.
Yumna Maumoon, a former deputy minister of the Yameen administration, tweeted that the balloons and flags of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) outnumbered the participants at the rallies.
South-Galolhu MP Ahmed Mahloof, the spokesperson for the opposition coalition parties, also mocked the rally on twitter, saying that some participants were injured during the rally after being squeezed in the tight crowds. He also used the hashtag ‘now clap’.
Also on Twitter, North-Mahchangolhi MP Mariya Ahmed Didi sarcastically said that there were so many supporters of President Yameen that she couldn’t pick out any of the islands they were on. She had also used the hashtag ‘no clap’.
South-Henveiru MP Mohamed Abdul Kareem said that in the attempt to show support, the rallies exposed that there is little support of the current administration.
The Opposition also condemned the rallies for using civil service employees and government vehicles.
Ali Waheed, the Chairperson of opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), shared a photo of government employees at a rally and said there will be no progress for the Country if the education and health centres are being used for political purposes.
The Opposition also claimed that civil service employees, expatriate teachers and nurses, and children from the islands had been forced to participate.
PPM has said that the rallies were held by supporters of President Yameen, to give “a clear message” from the citizens to the Opposition.
