Parliament has sent the name of Ahmed Naseer to the committee on independent institutions to appointment him as Governor of Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA).
After MMA Governor Dr. Azima Adam resigned on August 16, President Abdulla Yameen first submitted the name of Assistant MMA Governor Neeza Imad to Parliament to appoint her as Governor.
However, her name was withdrawn and replaced with Naseer’s name on August 20.
Neeza Imad resigned from MMA on the same day.
Naseer holds a Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com.), Economics from Curtin University of Technology, and a Master of Arts (MA), Development Economics and International Development from Williams College.
He was previously a state minister of the finance ministry in the Nasheed administration, and was also the CEO of CMDA.
He has also held senior positions in MMA.
Dr. Azeema Adam resigned as MMA Governor to move with her family to the United States after her husband Dr. Ali Naseer Mohamed was appointed as Resident Ambassador to the country.
According to MMA regulations, a new Governor has to be appointed within 45 days of the current Governor’s resignation.
