Indian actor Amitabh Bachchan has cancelled his visit to the World Health Organization (WHO) South-East Asia’s regional committee meeting at Maldives’ Paradise resort.
Amitabh, regarded as one of the most influential actors in Indian cinema, cancelled his trip due to health problems, according to some sources.
He is the WHO Goodwill Ambassador for Hepatitis of Southeast Asia.
Prior to the WHO’s regional committee meeting on Wednesday, an online campaign began calling on Amitabh to boycott his visit due to the imprisonment of opposition political leaders, and the obstruction of the rights of citizens.
The campaigners have thanked Amitabh for cancelling his trip, and also claimed that India’s health minister had also cancelled his visit due to their campaign.
While India’s health minister did not attend the WHO meeting, an official of the ministry was sent as his replacement.
