Ahmed Mahloof, South-Galolhu MP and spokesperson of the opposition coalition, has thanked Indian actor Amitabh Bachchan for cancelling his trip to Maldives.
Amitabh, regarded as one of the most influential actors in Indian cinema, cancelled his trip due to health problems, according to some sources.
As the World Health Organization (WHO)’s Goodwill Ambassador for Hepatitis of Southeast Asia, he was set to attend the WHO South-East Asia’s regional committee meeting at Maldives’ Paradise resort.
Prior to the WHO committee meeting on Wednesday, an online campaign began calling on Amitabh to boycott his visit due to the imprisonment of opposition political leaders, and the obstruction of citizens’ rights.
On Twitter, MP Mahloof thanked Amitabh for “listening to our call” and cancelling his trip.
In another tweet, Mahloof said Amitabh sent a clear message of his view on the state of Maldives on Indian television game show Kaun Banega Crorepati (Who Will Become a Millionaire) in which a multiple choice question was posed asking which country announced its decision to withdraw from the Commonwealth of Nations 2016.
After the contestant wrongly chose Singapore, Amitabh, the host, said Maldives left the Commonwealth after mounting pressure from the 53-nation group over corruption and deteriorating human rights in the country.
