Head of Jumhooree Party (JP) leader Qasim Ibrahim’s legal team, Hisaan Hussain says, while there are numerous questions surrounding Qasim’s trial, police had used old methods to investigate the case.
In an interview with VTV, Hisaan said police used the old method of attempting to force the accused into admit to a crime on Qasim.
She said that Qasim’s trial began in violation of the constitution and therefore, there is no way that the verdict can be valid. Speeding up the trial, by giving less than two hours to present the closing argument of a nine-day trial, only proves that it was a politically motivated trial. She added that the sentence handed to Qasim was shameful and that the Criminal Court’s report, produced after the state’s “group study”, was full of inconsistencies.
In the same interview, lawyer Ahmed Abdulla Afeef said Qasim didn’t say anything other politicians don’t normally say and that he doesn’t deserve a three-year prison sentence for it. He said, although people are arrested and tried after obtaining evidence, the “unsubstantiated evidence” against Qasim was obtained after his arrest.
State attorneys “going into hiding” after the first trial says a lot about the situation, Afeef said. He said when appealing Qasim’s prison sentence, many issues will be highlighted, and expressed hope that the outcome would be positive.
