A coalition of lawyers working to reform the judiciary has announced that they will work to remove Prosecutor General (PG) Aishath Bisam and Attorney General (AG) Mohamed Anil from their positions.
Speaking on VTV, Lawyer Moosa Siraj said that the PG and AG are no longer independent, and that there is evidence to accuse them of illegally using their positions to profit a specific group.
He claimed that employees at the PG’s office told them that they are being ordered by PG Bisam to complete illegal tasks set by the government.
“The lawyers at the PG office has told us that Bisam is ordering them to do as the government commands regardless of its legality.”
He also expressed concern over AG Anil repeatedly making late night visits to the Supreme Court, adding that the Supreme Court should take action against them for being influenced.
Lawyer Haneefa Khalid, pointing to the AG and PG, said that officials are not useful to the nation or its people if they do not fulfill their responsibilities.
She added that the results of their irresponsibility is that small organizations such as the Elections Commission (EC) can exercise influence over another state power and remove MPs from their Parliamentary seats.
Opposition parties have also vowed to remove Anil and Bisam.
