The trial of the brutally murdered blogger Yameen Rasheed has been set to proceed in discretion on Sunday.
VNews understands the trial scheduled for 2:30 p.m. on Sunday was set to closed-door trial on the request of the Prosecutor General’s Office.
The trial will begin with a preliminary hearing on Sunday on six of the seven suspects arrested by police.
The six suspects include four from capital Male’; Ismail Haisham Rasheed of H. Annaarumaage, Ahmed Zihan Ismail of M. Iraasmikuge, Ismail Rasheed of M. Thaaif, Hassan Shifaz of M. Kudhehi, and two from other islands; Mohamed Dhifran of Sindhubaadhuge/GDh. Gadhdhoo, and Hussain Ziyad of East/M. Kolhufushi.
According to police both Haisham and Zihan were actively involved in the murder of Yameen.
The six are charged with murder using a sharp object, while the seventh suspect is charged with accessory to murder.
If found guilty, all six would receive death sentences. However even if one from among Yameen’s next of kin objects to the death sentence and forgives those involved in his murder, the suspects would be given lifetime prison sentences.
Police had previously stated that Yameen’s murder was not politically motivated and that his killers were religious extremists. Police said they had sought the help of four countries in investigating the case.
Yameen was found near the staircase of his home, M. Spectular on April 23, sustaining brutal stab wounds. He was first discovered by a resident of the house.
Yameen succumbed to injuries later, while being treated at state-run Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital, according to the hospital.
According to reports, Yameen’s chest alone had 14 deep stab wounds.
