Residents of Noonu Atoll’s Lhohi staged a peaceful protest on Tuesday expressing anger over power cuts in the island.
President of Lhohi Council, Abdulla Salim, told Vnews that the island has been experiencing power cuts since Friday, causing damages to expensive household electrical appliances.
He said they gave enough time for utility service provider Fenaka Corporation to resolve the issue.
“Fenaka asked for some time to install the 160-kilowatt generator brought from another island. Residents gave that time. But even with that generator service is not being provided efficiently and majority of the time, there is no power.”
Saleem said residents were demanding Fenaka’s assurance that the issue will be resolved and to inform them when it will be resolved, but the company has not given that information.
One of the protestors said what Fenaka’s words and actions don’t match and hence, they have lost faith in the company.
The island has five generators, but only one is in use, which the island council said is getting overloaded.
