Former police chief Abdulla Riyaz has called for the resignation of incumbent Commissioner of Police Ahmed Areef claiming that his failures are causing the police service to become political.
In an interview with VTV, Riyaz said, while some senior police officers are being dismissed and others are being demoted, it raises the question whether it was happening under Areef’s watch.
He said it a responsibility of the Commissioner of Police to guarantee job security of police officers, but Areef has failed to do so.
Responding to rumours that Chief Superintendent of Police Mohamed Riyaz was fired for providing information to him, the former police chief said, as someone who has served the police force for a lengthy period, he has a good relationship with all police officers. He added that, even if a police officer does not provide inside information, citizens are well aware of the way the institution is being run.
Expressing concern about the dismissal of educated and capable police officers, Riyaz said he would fight for such officers when another government comes to power.
