Former Presidents Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom and Mohamed Nasheed have called the government to extend Jumhooree Party (JP) leader Qasim Ibrahim’s medical leave.
Gayyoom tweeted that according to doctors Qasim needs more time to recover before travelling, hence the government should respond favorably.
Meanwhile Nasheed tweeted that Qasim should be allowed to complete his medical treatment as prescribed by his doctors in Singapore. Therefore, the government should grant him leave, the tweet read.
Some media had reported that Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) has refused to extend Qasim’s medical leave. Many had also criticized the government for ordering Qasim to return without completing his treatment.
Earlier, the correctional service issued an extension for Qasim’s medical trip after his family sent medical documents provided by Dr. Michael Lim Chun Leng at Singapore’s Heart, Stroke, and Cancer Centre, stating that Qasim needed to stay in Singapore for three months.
However the 20-day extension would expire on Tuesday.
Qasim underwent a heart surgery on September 20 at Singapore’s Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital to eliminate three blockages in his heart. Doctors have said that he will not be able to travel any time soon.
