Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom visited son Faris Maumoon, detained on bribery allegations, in Maafushi Prison on Thursday.
This is the fourth visit by Gayoom since Dhiggaru MP Faris’ detainment on July 18.
In a tweet post the visit, Gayoom said Faris was in good condition and keeping strong.
Faris’ mother Nasreena Ibrahim and sister Yumna Maumoon also accompanied the former President to visit Faris.
Both Gayoom and daughter Yumna had been criticizing the relevant institutions for Faris’ imprisonment. Gayoom also previously critiqued the international society, saying their actions do not match their words.
The former first couple had also attended one of the trial hearings of son Faris.
Faris’ legal team and family have, on numerous occasions, expressed concern over the treatment of Faris by some institutions and for withholding some rights that should be given to him.
Faris is being charged with identity fraud for using the flag and logo of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) at a news conference on March 22 after being dismissed from the party.
If found guilty of the charge, he would face nine months and 18 days in prison.
In addition to the identity fraud case, Faris is being tried on bribery charge. He has repeatedly denied both the charges.
