Maduvvari MP Mohamed Ameeth has said that he has done many things that were against his own morals and principles to uphold President Abdulla Yameen’s government.
Addressing opposition alliance’s rally in Maduvvari on Friday night, Ameeth said President Yameen is not a compassionate leader and that he defected to the opposition when government’s brutality spiralled out of control.
He said that despite having done many things that were against his own morals for the government, in return he received nothing but pain.
Ameeth said he would continue to speak against the unjust punishments being given to former president Mohamed Nasheed, Jumhooree Party leader Qasim Ibrahim, Adhaalath Party leader Imran Abdulla and Dhiggaru MP Faris Maumoon.
Ameeth further said that he was stripped of his parliament seat and detained for not singing government’s praises, which he said is something he will no longer do. He added that President Yameen did nothing for him to win his seat, therefore there is no reason for him to stand behind President Yameen.
Addressing the rally, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s Vice President Mohamed Shifaz said government officials would have to take responsibility for what they are doing, and that opposition is working to establish justice and equality in the country.
He said that opposition parties will remain united, and that efforts to divide the opposition will not succeed.
