Met Office has issued a yellow alert for torrential rain in a large part of Maldives.
The yellow alert is valid from 11:45am to 3:00pm on Thursday, in the region between Haa Alif and Meemu Atoll.
Met Office also predicted fairly widespread rain with a few heavy showers and thunderstorms across the country from 10:00am Thursday to 10:00am Friday.
Surface winds are expected to head from west to south-west at 15 – 25 miles per hour in central and southern atolls and west to north-west at 7 – 17 miles per hour in northern atolls, said Met Office.
Wind may gust 45 - 50 miles per hour during showers.
Seas are expected to be generally rough.
Met Office said the worsening weather is related to the storm in Sri Lanka, and vessels have been advised caution and to seek weather information prior to travel.
