President Abdulla Yameen and First Lady Fathimath Ibrahim have arrived in China on Wednesday on a four-day visit at the invitation of Chinse President Xi Jinping.
They left for China after a two-day stop-over in Singapore.
According to the President’s Office (PO), during the visit, heads of the two countries will hold official discussions and key agreements will be signed to enhance trade, professional and socioeconomic development as well as technical and other collaborations between the two counties.
While this year marks 45 years since Maldives and China established diplomatic relations, PO said the President’s visit is expected to further strengthen Maldives-China relations for the common benefit of both counties.
This is President Yameen’s third official visit to China since assuming office. He previously visited China in 2014 and 2015.
The visit comes at a time parliament has given approval to the Free Trade Agreement with China. However, the agreement is being strongly criticized by the opposition citing lack of information, and opposition parties are calling on the government to halt the agreement signing.
