Minister of State for Health, Dunya Maumoon, has said that she is worried about her father Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, who has been detained.
Former president Gayoom, who is Preisdent Abdulla Yameen’s half-brother, was arrested on Monday night shortly after state of emergency was declared in the country.
Dunya tweeted on Wednesday that she was concerned and worried for her father, and expressed hope that he will be free soon.
Since Gayoom’s arrest, Dunya has been tweeting, wishing for his safety and return home.
While Gayoom has been arrested, his son, Dhiggaru MP Faris Maumoon, was released from detention on Tuesday. He was released on Criminal Court’s order as he was one of nine political prisoners the Supreme Court on Thursday ordered to be released immediately.
Many have been criticizing Dunya for remaining in government despite the “injustices” against Gayoom and Faris.
Gayoom withdrew his support for the government in 2016 amid a bitter power struggle with Yameen over the ruling party. He has since joined hands and signed an agreement with former president and leader of MDP, Mohamed Nasheed, JP leader Qasim Ibrahim and Adhaalath Party leader Imran Abdulla to work for reform.
