The secret witness by the state had stated in Criminal Court on Monday, that Dhiggaru MP Ahmed Faris Maumoon did not offer any bribe.
The state witness, also an MP, swore that Faris did not offer a bribe to get them to sign the impeachment motion against Speaker of Parliament Abdulla Maseeh. The witness also stated that they did not ask Faris to give them any money.
The secret witness also said that they signed the motion because former President and Faris’ father Maumoon Abdul Gayoom called them and asked them to sign the petition. But since realizing the gravity of the situation, the witness had asked that their name be removed from the motion.
The witness also said that they signed the motion out of respect for Gayoom, without any manipulation. The statement given to police regarding Faris was a lie and was done out of anger towards Ahmed Shaafiu, who was arrested with Faris, the witness said.
The witness explained that they were angry with Ahmed Shaafiu when he leaked a photo of the witness signing the motion.
Faris submitted President Abdulla Yameen’s name along with former police commissioner Ahmed Arif and police acting commissioner Abdulla Navaz as documental evidence. Faris had submitted the names of 62 individuals as evidence.
The names of Attorney General Mohamed Anil and Prosecutor General Aishath Bisham were also submitted as documental evidence.
Faris is also being charged with identity fraud for the illegal use of the flag and logo of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM). If proven guilty of the charge, Faris will be sentenced to nine months and 18 days in prison.
Since his arrest on February 8, Faris has been kept in prison. He was first arrested in relation to the case on July 18, 2017.
