Shops in Male’ are facing difficulties in supplying enough bottled water to meet the increasing demand in the city.
Some shops said they are having difficulties supplying 500ml and 1.5 litre bottles of 'Taza' brand water. Some have run out of stock and other shops have stopped taking orders.
While 'Taza' is one of the most popular brands, some shops in the local market area said they have been forced to hike bottled water prices due to increasing demand and shortages.
An official of Island Beverages Maldives – the company that produces 'Taza' water – said that the shortage is caused by a repair work being undertaken in one of their plants and that the issue will be resolved soon.
In addition, an official of the company that produces 'Life' brand water said that the increased demand owes to the hot weather. The official said that they try to process daily orders on time, and houses, to which they are unable to supply water on the day of the order, are supplied water the following day.
The city faced bottled water shortages around the same time last year as well.
