Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed and Justice Ali Hameed’s appeal hearings have been scheduled for Thursday.
The appeal hearings were scheduled to begin after the Justices were found guilty of influencing official conduct and sentenced to one year, seven months and six days in prison on May 10.
Their legal team appealed the two verdicts for Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed and the verdict for Justice Ali Hameed at the Criminal Court last Tuesday.
Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed’ appeal hearing is set to take place at 10:15 a.m. while Justice Ali Hameed’s appeal hearing is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
The CJ was also convicted of the obstruction of state duties charge against him and was sentenced to four months and 24 days in prison on May 8. The duo was also charged with obstruction of justice, accepting bribes and terrorism.
A hearing on the obstruction of justice charge against the duo and former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom was also scheduled to take place at 11:00 a.m. at Criminal Court on Thursday.
Meanwhile both justices have stated that the charges against them and Gayoom are false charges aimed to frame them to achieve a certain agenda.
The Justices were arrested after the government refused to implement a Supreme Court order signed by five justices, calling for the release of nine political prisoners on February 1, 2018. Security forces stormed the Supreme Court and arrested the Justices after State of Emergency was declared by President Abdulla Yameen.
